Tyco received an order in April
2008 for the Public Transport Information and Priority System (PTIPS), the projected estimated at $20 million.
The PTIPS project is to provide buses throughout NSW the ability to ask
the Traffic Signal System (SCATS) priority for a green signal if the bus is
running late. The PTIPS system consists of a software package that
manages the buses schedule against a timetable and communicates directly with
SCATS, an On Board Unit is installed on every bus which is connected to the
Automatic Fare Collection system, GPS and 3G Modem.
In 2008 Tyco
manufactured and deployed 300 On Board Units (OBU) as a Trial, for installation
on the State transit Authority (STA) buses in the Northern Beaches area.
On completion of the trial Tyco undertook a review of the OBU design and some changes
to the design was approved by the RTA. In 2009 Tyco was schedule to
manufacture and install 2100 OBU’s, to the entire STA fleet within 12 months
which was completed three months early. Late 2009 the RTA approved Tyco
to re-design the OBU in order to provide further functionality and this is
expected to be completed in Mid 2010. A small service
department has been set up by Tyco in order to support the maintenance of the
PTIPS hardware and to repair any units that have failed. In 2011, it is
expected another 2000 On Board units will be deployed to all of the Non
Government Buses throughout NSW.
